Learn more about Agios Nikolaos
Another dynamic duo that rivals Elounda and Plaka, is Agios Nikolaos and Sissi. The city of Agios Nikolaos is named after the patron saint of sailors and hosts a fairly large port. It is most popular because of the enchanting lake which is now connected to the port, situated mid-town with restaurants and cafes surrounding it. Sitting above the lake with an outlook to the sea, words such as charismatic and chic come to one’s mind. While there are archaeological and folklore museums in the city, there are also options for those simply wishing to sunbathe on a sandy beach; namely, Voulisma, Almyros and Ammoudi. On the other hand, Sissi is a small fishing village with a similar setting to Agios Nikolaos and approx. 28km from the city. Quaint taverns and bars surround the miniature port and fresh fish is always on menus! Near to Sissi, one finds the famous Selinary Monastery and gorge, known both as a pilgrimage site and excellent for birdwatching of vultures. Both Agios Nikolaos and Sissi are perfect places to relax and experience the holiday feeling of being on an island.
For those wanting to venture off the beaten track, Lasithi plateau with its many traditional villages and hospitable inhabitants is a great place to familiarise oneself with local culture. It is also home to the cave of Zeus which, apart from a great story, is a magnificent geological experience! Moving more to the eastern – and more barren – part of Crete, beaches such as that of Makri Gialo and the village of Kato Zakros stand out for their rough beauty and as top destinations for more active holidays that may include hiking and surfing.
Most of these areas could be reached by bus, coach or hitch hiking but why have the trouble, expense and restrictions? Holidays are about relaxing and making the most of the time you have. Sterling can help you do so, by providing you with the appropriate vehicles for your adventures on Crete! Simply get in, drive and enjoy everything the island has to offer you! We will take care of the rest.
